Although the focus of the church is very much on the morning star of Easter sunrise, the way the church orients itself and the way it conducts itself don’t seem to match. Or maybe it’s that the way that the church conducts itself and the way that society conducts itself are working against each other. You can tell where the focus is based on where the holiday lands. We know that he died on a Friday because they wanted his body down before the Sabbath starts, which is Friday evening sundown. We know he was in the grave for three days, and yet most celebrate his rise less than two days later on Sunday morning.

Sometimes we wonder why people who knew him so well didn’t recognize him when they met him at the grave or in the days following. But I can think of a few reasons why it would’ve been hard to wrap your head around what you were seeing.

The last time he was seen he was bruised, swollen, and dead for those who witnessed it. Then suddenly a few days later, which is too soon for wounds to heal, and too soon for any resolution in your grief, all of a sudden he’s standing there in front of you – perfectly well. That alone is enough reason for your mind to play tricks on you as your denial becomes the filter. They still would’ve been in the denial phase of grief, much less being able to bridge the gap from what they know to what they’re seeing…

Sometimes I wonder why people seem to have no real concept of the gravity of the holy week. Yes, as Christians our focus is always on the resurrection, on the new hope and light that Yeshua came to shine on our world. But, I think we take a lot of what he actually did for granted. Maybe that’s why so many of us seem to conduct ourselves as though we aren’t forgiven or precious to God. Or that it’s so easy to be forgiven and absolve ourselves of the responsibility of the conduct becoming of a Christian.

Many churches seem to skip right through from the gruesome crucifixion to the celebration after his rise. Many churches don’t even really preach about what it means for him to have gone into the grave, what experience he may have had in the three days between. But it’s not just him.

We understand his entire story because of the gospel accounts written by his closest followers, the Disciples. So let’s take a moment to slip inside the story, post-crucifixion in the suspension of time between the cross and the rising Son…

*If you wish to fully honour the Rite of the Tenebrae then collect 14 candles. Light one with a Prayer for Yeshua. Then light each of the others from that one flame. Each for one of the apostles, and the final for his mother, Mary. Then, with each reading of the stations, extinguish one of the candles before moving on to the next station, leaving his to last.

The Bible recounts in detail, and on repeat, the gruesome story of the Passion of the Christ. Not only in the four gospels but also continually referenced throughout the rest of the New Testament epistles, but it started before even that. Throughout the Old Testament, there are hundreds of prophecies that indicate the birth, life and death of the Messiah. That story was being told since the beginning.

This sermon is not for the faint of heart.

It is a horrid gruesome tale.

…and we will honour it as such.

Yeshua was not a political rebel. He was a religious revolutionary. And yet, he died one of the worst deaths the Romans had to offer: the death of a traitor, although he never betrayed anyone.

Just for today, we only take it to the moment of the cross, and that’s because most of us are still treating it like we’re still nailing him to that cross. He hangs there until we receive the rest of what he has done.

Eucharist means Thanks Giving.  It is the art and act of giving thanks. Communion is the experience of sharing space, time, attention, and presence. It is the way that we show our thanks.

We often think of this particular holiday as intimate because Yeshua shared with us the teaching of taking Communion. He broke bread with his brothers in ministry and shared the teachings that they didn’t yet understand about how his body would be broken for them and his blood would be poured out for them. When we hear the teachings of the Eucharist they make sense because of the context of the cross. But when he first shared those words his body and his spirit had not yet been broken. His fellowship had no way of understanding the depths of what it was that he was offering them.

We often forget that the whole scene, the whole speech, is foreshadowing the terrors that came in just hours. But also, the whole scene of the last supper reveals to us the most intimate moment and teaching that Yeshua offered us through his fellowship. It’s not just about the sacrifice that he was yet to make, it’s also about how important sharing that space and every moment as though it was your last really was.

It’s hard for the human mind to understand things beyond a dualistic perspective and so a concept like a fully divine and fully human being is really hard to wrap your mind around. Some people worship Yeshua as though he is divinity incarnate, and he was. Other people worship Yeshua as though he was the perfect version of a human, and he was. But we tend to project or layer our understanding of his teachings onto how we understand him. And for a man who taught about love, we paint him with this very docile pastel-coloured filter. We make him all of the things that he thought about in the beatitudes by making him meek, docile, gentle and forgiving, and he was. He was the embodiment of love, but sometimes love is fierce.

We look at him as divinity walking around in human form because we forget that he came in human form to make divinity relevant to us…

Throughout many traditions, 40-day journeys are a rite of passage. In the Hebrew tradition, a purification rite (after birth) is 40 days, as is the grieving period. Fasting rituals are often 40 days. Both the Lent and Advent seasons are 40 days. There are tribes throughout Africa that believe a child should not touch the ground for 40 days to make sure the soul is anchored before grounding into the earth. 40 is an important and sacred number in the Bible.

The Israelites wandered for 40 years in the desert after leaving captivity. Few of us realize that journey is only an 11-day walk from Egypt to Jerusalem. Even taking breaks to give the huge masses of exhausted people respite would have only taken 40 days. As a pilgrimage, it is often done as a 40day ritual to honour the 40 years in the desert. So why did it drag on for so long?

As we make our way through the 40-day Lent season, can we really honour each step of the journey?

Can we learn enough from the past to relieve ourselves of being doomed to repeat it?

The Bible is a revolutionary book. Not only do the people constantly rebel against God’s commands, but God rebels against injustices, the people rebel against human authority, and the Bible itself rebels against the status quo and norms of society. The original rebels are God, the people, and the Word itself. And as the incarnate Word, we can intuit what to expect from Yeshua as that very energy incarnated in human form.

God is a complicated God and often that leaves us confused. He demands obedience to the rules while constantly pushing the boundaries, inviting us into more, and sending major characters to change the game. When to know to follow the rebel and when to hold our ground is the personal conflict every soul struggles with. Why doesn’t God make it more clear? Free will! He offers options and opportunities constantly, but they are all just invitations. I believe He holds a prayer for what He hopes for you but always throws you the veto rights… except when He exercises His own ultimate veto rights on our free-will choices. No wonder we can’t ever figure out where the uncrossable line is, who to follow, and what new information to take into our hearts.

For beings who want to love God wholeheartedly,

live life in the fullness of who God made you to be,

and follow God’s plan with every fibre of your being,

it is a nuanced journey of constant discernment.

Sexuality and ‘spirituality’ get a bad rap in most Christian circles. The Bible has a lot to say on both. It is pretty common that we are exposed to the epistolic teachings of Paul and Peter who came after Yeshua. They were pretty hard-line ‘no’ on both. In fact, there was a comment by one of them that if you’re too weak to be strong then you might as well get married to compensate. Not exactly a glowing review.

Paraphrasing, but that’s more or less what they were teaching. So this week we’re going to take a look at the basics of biblical sexuality and also spirituality or as it is referred to in Bible: spiritual prostitution.

Now, these two concepts don’t really go together. At least not biblically anyway. It’s mostly just a literary device in that one is called prostitution which makes you think of sexuality and therefore we put the two concepts together… or did we?

Yeshua was the king of metaphors, and this morning I want to introduce you to another triple threat. Yeshua calls himself all sorts of things throughout the gospels, especially in John. In this mornings' passage, he refers to himself as both the gate and the shepherd, and I am sure that we have all heard of him as the Lamb.

But, these passages make about as much sense to us in 21st century industrialized Canada as most of the Old Testament does. We need to take a deeper look at this passage to understand what he was getting at. If we do that we will see that the 1st century Jews to which Yeshua was talking, didn't get it either. How much of a chance do we have?

Relentless Series: Invocavit Sunday ~ Tithing ~

Genesis 14: 17-24

Genesis 28: 10-22

1 Chronicles 29 :1-19

Psalm 51

Mark 12: 13-17

Romans 13

Malachi 3: 6-18

Did you know that the practice of Tithing actually came from a willing offering? It was not a command from God. Rather, on several separate occasions, different founders of the faith offered a tithe to God as a reciprocal acknowledgement for what God had promised or provided. The original design of the practice was not that we would buy in by giving what we scraped together but actually gave a kick-back to support the ministry and show appreciation – more like tipping a practitioner or service provider.

Tithing is about dedicating our resources to a higher cause knowing that we will ultimately benefit as a result of what we are getting in that exchange. But, following our lead, God developed expectations and holds high standards. Though, with an adaptation based on the original prayer of offering: a tenth of EVERYTHING that God gives should be reinvested in your future and relationship with Him.

It’s about shifting our perspective on finances to understand that as an investment (credit) rather than the traditional deficit consciousness that keeps practitioners of the faith quite disempowered.

Exodus 34: 27-35

Proverbs 30: 1-9

Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the Lent season and for many, that means it is also the first day of a very hungry journey. If you have ever heard of fasting then you know that it is something akin to a hunger strike… or is it?

Like most of the practices of the faith the true meaning of fasting, and Ash Wednesday, are kinda lost in the shuffle. But before you get lost in the struggle…

So, in honour of Yeshua’s 40 days in the desert being tempted and tested, and the founders of the faith who wandered for 40 yrs lost along their way, let’s get back to the heart of the purpose, before committing to the ‘empty’ pain.

*This is probably the most technical sermon Rev.Rynn has ever done, but it is by request, as we have received many inquiries on ‘how to’ regarding Biblical fasting. The second half of the sermon is awfully dry… so bear with us as we get the technicalities out of the way.

** Rev.Rynn offers these reflections for educational purposes only and does not claim to be a qualified health practitioner. Please seek guidance from an appropriate source who can assess your needs personally if you plan to take on a fasting practice.
